Noirmoutier
To reach the island of Noirmoutier, you have the possibility of taking the bridge which connects it to the continent, or the passage of the Gois, a submersible road unique in the world. This road “under the sea” 4.5 km long, connects, at low tide only, the mainland to the island. You can cross it by car, on foot or by bike. In summer, the Gois is even guarded by gendarmes on horseback….Beware, you should check the tide times, because this passage is flooded twice a day at high tide!
The passage of the Gois is a very privileged place in the Vendée for fishing on foot. At low tide, you can fish for clams, cockles, scallops, mussels, razor clams or other razor clams. Be reasonable in your withdrawals as they are regulated.
Commonly called “the island of mimosas”, it offers landscapes of dunes, forests of holm oaks and salt marshes.
Noirmoutier is also known for its “Bonnotte”, early potatoes, harvested in spring, and very coveted by the great restaurateurs.
